Each November Thrive Life (formerly Shelf Reliance) has a HUGE Black Friday sale.   I know many people start planning their black Friday shopping well in advance so I wanted to make sure you had all the info.

Changes at LDS Home Storage Centers

Frustration!
May 1^st the LDS Home Storage Centers underwent a change, that after some time and understanding, I stood fully behind. Those volunteering at the Centers east of the Mississippi, and a few more select HSC, had been informed that after July 1^st there would no longer be any on-site canning available. Up to November 1^st, the bulk items they had on hand could be sold and the mobile sealers could be loaned out to patrons
to seal their bulk items. They were also told that after November 1^st all items received by the Home Storage Centers would be prepackaged, but the sealer and packaging items would still be available for patrons who might choose to re-package their items for longer term storage. For instance the prepackaged milk is now sold only in bags and has a shelf life of 2 years, if however that same milk is properly sealed for long term storage the shelf life extends to 20 years.

Like I said, I stood fully behind these changes. Having more items prepackaged and ready for easy pick up, would make it easier for me to help people see that this was a viable, inexpensive way to build their home stores, and more people could find themselves better prepared for whatever their personal emergency may be. Now, I’m reeling.

The new HSC Price List came out on November 1^st and no longer has listed any packaging items available for purchase. While the number of food items available has not changed, any options for re-packaging or purchasing and sealing your own (even off-site) are now off the table. I called my local HSC for confirmation and clarity...”Had I not understood properly? When did they learn that packaging items would not be available for purchase? What was the plan for the sealers on site available for patrons to borrow? There are still five items available for bulk purchase, how are they to be stored for the long term?” *Deep breath* The volunteers at my local HSC were notified 4 days before the change (four, F-O-U-R) that they were to sell off the remaining packaging items they had on hand and the sealers are now due to be sent back to Salt Lake City. There was an attempt to let as many patrons in the surrounding community know what was happening and the time table they had, but news doesn’t always spread the way one hopes and many patrons have been taken off guard by the more drastic than anticipated change. How to store the remaining five bulk items will be left up to each individual patron. Thank goodness for Mylar and Food Grade Buckets. (Perhaps that will be one of my upcoming posts…)

I’ve learned over time that the Lord has his hand in our lives, and that “all things (eventually) work for the good of those who love Him”. I know that one day I’ll understand this better and perhaps even bless this change. I’m sure much of the free-fall I’m feeling has a great deal to do with the need to further educate myself to other (new-to-me) ways to build a variety filled home store on a budget. (Personal growth isn’t my favorite thing while I’m in the midst of it.)


Update: On December 5, 2013 the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints released an Official Press Release on the changes at the LDS (Canneries) Home Storage Centers. 

Cranberries

Just in time for an appearance at your holiday table, Thrive Life has unveiled its latest product, Freeze Dried Cranberries!

Chef Todd has put together a beautiful Cranberry Sauce recipe, but that’s not all these freeze dried beauties can be easily added to. Just imagine your holiday cookies with a bit of tangy cranberry added. Ever tried a Cranberry Muffin? What about a Blueberry/Cranberry Muffin? Cranberry Cornbread? Simply replace your “fresh” store bought cranberries with rehydrated, (fully ripened before picking) Thrive Life Freeze Dried Cranberries.

September Specials

This month I get to begin with sharing a favorite recipe. Un-Boxed Mac &Cheese
½ C THRIVE Chesses Blend
¼ C THRIVE Butter Powder or 6 Tbsp. butter
6 T THRIVE Powdered Milk, prepared
2 C uncooked elbow macaroni plus water for cooking
2 C Freeze Dried Broccoli (optional)

1.  Bring 2 quarts of water to a boil. Add macaroni. Boil 5 minutes. Add Freeze Dried Broccoli. Cook another 3 minutes or until the broccoli and macaroni are tender. Drain.
2. Cheese sauce: combine Cheese Blend, butter or Butter Powder, and milk in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir and heat until sauce is thick and bubbly.
3. Pour sauce over cooked macaroni and broccoli, stirring through until noodles are coated. Serve hot.

Vary this by adding your favorite Freeze Dried Meat or TVP for protein. (This sentence should have made a great segue into the next product, however I need to take a moment to credit the site this recipe comes from, and then we’ll get back to the specials.)

Reading over the above recipe I noticed that my ingredient's list didn’t have milk in it. I’ve made it before, did I not use milk? Did I use milk and not copy it into my files correctly? Anyway I did a web search looking for the recipe so I could share it with you as it should be… How surprised was I to find it on Heather Lorimers site, ‘Cooking with my Food Storage’? Only enough to roll my eyes, and laugh at myself. I will forever follow Heather; she’s a Home Store goddess.

(Back to my beautiful segue…”Vary this by adding your favorite Freeze Dried Meat or TVP for protein.”

I know I’ve shared my love for the Ham Dices before, but it’ has to be shared again. They taste so good and are so simple to use! In our home they go so fast there’s nearly no need to take steps to lengthen the short (2 weeks once open) shelf life by placing them in in freezer bags and storing them in the freezer once we've cracked the can. I for one am excited that both Cheese Blend and Ham Dices are two of this month’s specials.

If this month your home store budget is tight, I would like to suggest that you think about the Lentils. The net weight of the #10 can is 88 oz. or 5 and a half pounds, it's specialty priced this month at $10.29 that’s $1.87 per pound; Better than the cost at most grocery stores and already sealed for a 30 year shelf life! Beans and legumes are a much needed staple for our home stores and an easy answer to add diversity of flavor and texture.

The freeze dried Chopped Onions and Green Onions are on sale! These are two of the products that can save. you. money. Use only what you need and don’t worry about the rest until you next require them. You won’t have to throw any away if you don’t need them again real soon. I love saving money.

The Sparkie FireStarter weighs less than an ounce and can be lit with just a single hand in even the wettest of weather conditions. I watched a number of videos to learn more about it, and this was my favorite. Concise, and clear with a few pointers thrown in.

Here’s something new (to me) and interesting, LifeCaps Emergency Bottle. It’s a days supply of nutrients that somehow curbs hunger in just three pills a day. What!? Having no knowledge of this item I had to go looking for more information. Skipping anything that had to do with using them as a dieting aid, these were the links at which I gained the most information; Amazon and Utah Preppers. Then there is the link containing the ingredients list… I can’t see what it has in it to ease hunger... I’m intrigued.

With a width and depth of 36”x 24”, standing 17.5” when filled, the Under the Bed #10 holds up to 28 gallon sized or #10  cans. Just like the other Thrive Life rotations systems, food rotation is easy using the first in first out system.

Thrive Life August Specials

Were I to think the world revolved around me, I could easily be led to believe that the Thrive Life items on specials for August were chosen just for me. THRIVE Mangoes and Peaches are favorites in my home. Often my eldest daughter will opt for a handful of peaches as her breakfast opposed to whatever it is I’ve burned, and my youngest child has been known to carry around a #10/gallon sized can of Mangoes begging me not to starve him to death, “A apple Mama, a apple?”.

Two of the best-selling yogurt bite favorites are also reduced in price this month, Strawberry and Passion Fruit. (I won’t even acknowledge that we have an open can of yogurt bites in the house while my kids are in earshot.) For a recipe to whet your taste buds and to cool in the summer’s heat try a Very Berry Strawberry Smoothie.
1 Cup THRIVE Strawberries
1 Cup THRIVE Strawberry Yogurt Bites
2 Tablespoons THRIVE Melon Berry Burst
1 ½ Cups Cold water
1 Cup ice cubes
Combine all ingredients in a blender, blending until smooth. Add ice cubes or Yogurt Bites as needed to gain desired consistency. Serve immediately. Oh, so good!

If you haven’t tried this combination yet, it’s time! Scrambled Egg Mix, Sausage Crumbles, Monterey Jack Cheese and Red Bell Peppers. Yum! The Sausage Crumbles are real, cooked sausage freeze dried; The Red Bell Peppers are fresh, freeze dried peppers.

The freeze drying process is begun by flash freezing the cleaned/prepared product. The moisture is then slowly removed with low heat, leaving nutrients, taste, texture, shape and color intact. If you like your food fresh, you’ll enjoy it freeze dried.

I thought I was in love with the Fire Box – I’m still enamored with its ability to be folded nearly flat, and then I looked at the QuickFire Stove… Made by the same company that created the Firebox the QuickFire Stove was actually made for use with different sized cooking vessels and multiple fuels in mind.
